Christmas Time

Christmas is one of my favorites holidays, the origins of Christmas are in the Christian religion and it celebrates the birth of the sun of god. According to the Christian’s stories there were three kings that brought gifts to the new born.

Now we also celebrate as a tradition of the occidental world, the arriving of Santa Claus at Christmas night bringing gifts to all the children in the world.

I think that most of the celebration that we have now it’s according to a culture that we had incorporated as ours that mostly is promote the values of the capitalism and the imperialism.

On the other hand, I think that we should make this holyday a time to spend with the family and friends, and for the people who believe in this religion a special time to celebrate. We shouldn`t be so worried about buying stuff and getting presents.

I usually celebrate with my closest family and sometimes we spend it with others members of the family, like uncles and cousins. We usually have a nice dinner prepared by my mom and then we exchange gifts, on the next day we hang out in my house with the rest of the family.

I like the Christmas time because I can spend a really great time with my family and we can share special gifts. 

A new and strange term

My name is Belén and I’m in third year of sociology.

I hope that this new term won`t be as difficult as I think, because it’ll be a really short semester so we will have less time to see the contents that we need, also the contents of the subjects have been reduced.  So that’s why I’ve decided to take only the obligatory subjects and the English 4 class, that’s means that I didn’t take any compulsory subject so I might get a little behind with my classes. Any way… I take Sociological Theory 4, Economical Sociology, Population and Society, Sociology of the Organizations, and Quantitative Techniques 2.

I’m not really happy about being studying in the Christmas time, specially because it is summer, so the hot weather makes it really difficult, in the other hand, some of my friends are already on vacations and planning their trips for the next month, so that make me wish to be on vacations too.

In this class I would like to practice my speaking skills because in English that is the hardest part to me. Also, I would like to have fun activities to make easier the learning process. 

A picture is worth a thousand words...

Hi! Today I’m going to write about a photograph that I like. I decided to choose a picture from my own albums rather than a famous photograph’s picture, that’s because I think that have more meant to me and I can show you a little more of my life.

So I chose this picture….

I like it because it remembered me the trip that I and my friends take the last summer.

We travel to Peru and Ecuador in February with 5 of my high school friends, and we have a blessed. We had so much fun, and we learn a lot. We went backpacking to Lima, Máncora, Baños, Quito, Montañita etc…

This picture was taken when we went to a little town called Baños de Agua Santa, that’s located near to the sierra, and the Ecuadorian jungle. So one day we take a trip to the jungle and we went to a place called “the house of monkeys” a park where there are different kinds of monkeys and they are jumping around everywhere, they are not locked into cages, so they jump over you and hold on to your head.

This photograph I think that was taken for one of the staff of the place. And shows one part of the park in the jungle, and appeared in it my friends Mariana, Javiera, Ignacia, Francesca and Andrea, and I in the middle.

I was telling you that I really like this picture because there are all my travel mates in it, and bring to my memory all the funny stories and great time that we had there.

I hope that my next trip will be that fun and exciting.  

TV serials...

Hi! Today I’m going to write as. I think that the role that they have in society is entertain, because in most of the cases is not a real representation of how life is, how people resolved their problems, and how they deal with their relationships.

                In general, these programs are fantasy or an exaggeration of the problems and situations of real life, so I think that can’t usually contribute to educate people or make them form and opinion or critic society. However I consider TV serials really entertaining and fun, you get involved with the story and the different characters.

                So I think that most of the people like or love these serials, because they can make you feel like being in a world and situation completely different and besides these shows are written to captivate audience with all the drama and incomplete stories episode by episode.

                I don’t have a favorite serial right now, but there are many that I watch and keep track of. For example I usually watch Dr. House every Thursday, I love it because the characters are so funny and every episode has a story, a case to resolve.  

                I watch different serials that I like, in general two or three times a week, in the TV or the computer. 

My favorite piece of technology...

My favorite piece of technology has to be my notebook. I got it when I started college, so my parents give to me as a birthday present, before of that I shared a computer with my brother.

I used in my room most of the time, for homework, studying, listen music or to entertain myself in the internet. 

I use it every day several hours for different motives.

I like my notebook because it let me been connected with my friends and the rest of the world, also I can make my works for school with more facilities and more independence from the rest of my family because I can use it when I want it, where I want it and the time I needed to.

The fact that is a portable computer is also very important to me, because I can bring it wherever I go, to the university or my friend’s homes.

My life without it, would not be has terrible because I’ll be able to move on, but it would be a lot more harder because I’ll have to coordinate with my brothers the use of the others computers in my home. 

          

Music...

Music has been important to society because is a way to express you, and in addition is something that everyone can felt related.

Anyone can find the type of music that can wake up different emotions inside, and in the other hand you can make music out of nothing, you don´t need great instruments to do it.

I really don´t have a favorite type of music, I really like many and diverse kind of music. I usually listen rock, pop, indie or folk music mostly originally from England an U.S. but in Spanish I like very much the “trova”, and the dance music like cumbia.

I don´t usually listen to music through a web site, I use to download songs, albums or even discographies by “torrent”. But I know this site called www.grooveshark.com where you can listen to all your favorite music for free.

I listen to music every day, mostly when I’m at home in my room, or when I’m riding in the bus, or in the car.

I listen to music because I relax and I can think about everything, also it brings back all different memories. So that’s way this activity is so important to me.

Hi! This post is about one of my favorite website. I’m a person that uses the computer and the internet a lot, so I have many sites that y use to visit.

One of them is the site of “El Mostrador”, www.elmostrador.cl.

This is one of the first online newspapers in the country, it was released in 2000, and in 2003 was recognized as a newspaper with the same conditions that traditional papers.

This website has everything that a common newspaper should have, with the most important news in the topics of politic, economy, national, culture etc.

I really like this site because, in the first place the advantage of an online paper is that the news are constantly being updated even faster that other Medias like TV. On the other hand, this kind of Medias makes possible the interaction with the readers because everyone can opine about the different news and debate with other readers.

Also I like El Mostrador in particularly because present an opinion and an editorial line different that the usual communication medias in Chile. I, in general, visit this website every day.  

Films...

This post is about movies. Write about why people like movies is little bit complex because I think that are many reasons.

Mainly I think that movies, at same that other types of art, represent the reality of human been and society, and in the other hand creates new worlds of imagination. There are not just products; there are experiences that mix music, visual art, movement etc.

Besides, a film can make you see from the eyes of another person, the interpretation of one part of the life that you might haven´t consider.

I don’t have a favorite movie so I’ll choose one of the many that I’d enjoy in my life.

This movie is called “The Edukators”, is a Drama released in 2004 and it was made in Germany.

The director was Hans Weingartner, and it was starring by Daniel Brühl, Stipe Erceg and Julia Jentsch.

The main characters are Jan, his best friend Peter and Peter’s girlfriend Jule. These three young friends are activist and anti-capitalist. Jan and Peter usually break into rich people’s home, not to robber, just to make a messed in the big houses and leave messages like: “you have too much money” or “the days of plenty are over”

On the course of the story grows a love triangle, and after a series of problems they might ending realizing that the young idealism might not last forever.

I liked it because I felt identified with the characters and the idea of young people who have ideals, and how as they go older they get cut by the system and society. I saw this movie when i was 16 years old.

My first Blog...

Hi! 

This is my first experience writing a Blog so I dont't know where to start.

Maybe I should write about my interests in writing or something like that, but in this case this is part of an assignment that my teacher of English asked me to do, so I'll tell you something about me.

Well my name is Mariabelén Pozo. Yes, probably you are thinking that my name is incorrectly written, that I've made some mistake, but the truth is that this is the correct way. The story behind this is that my mother didn't want that the people call me only for my fisrt name María, so she decided to put  the two names together.

My life is pretty common, I'm 20 years old and I live with my parents and my two brothers in Peñalolén.  

I'm studying sociology in the University of Chile, and in my weekends I go to a curse of "cut and confection of clothes" in an institute called Crearte.

In general I dont't like write beside the papers for the school, and I'm not very good at that. But that's because I think that this excercise will help me to practice.
